Rabbi Nathan Alfred

Rabbi Nathan Alfred was born (1980) and grew up in the United Kingdom. He read Classics at King’s College, Cambridge before moving to Budapest to play chess. He gained the title of FIDE Master before studying to be a rabbi in London and Jerusalem, getting his semicha in 2008.
He has worked for liberal Jewish communities across Europe, (including in Belgium and Luxembourg, 2008-2014), and beyond, including in Singapore (2015-2020) and New York. He is the founder rabbi of Bnei Maskilim in Lithuania (2023), and since 2024 has been the Senior Rabbi of the GIL, the Liberal Jewish Community in Geneva, Switzerland. He has been Chair of ERA since 2025. He is known for several innovative pan-European projects including EuroJews (2003-9), a virtual community for young adults, Baalei Tefilah Europe (2020-1), for training lay leaders to lead prayers, and a European Bar/Bat Mitzvah Teacher Training Programme (2023).
