Central Personalities and Processes in the Rabbinical Revolution

​

The biggest revolution in Jewish culture took place in the first centuries C.E., carried out by a small group of sages who lived in the Land of Israel and in Babylonia, the sages of the Mishnah and the Talmudim. Who were the personalities who moved this revolution? Why did they create this change? In which fields did this revolutionary spirit express itself and how shall their product be called?
The Course will focus on becoming familiar with the basic sources of the Talmudic literature, meeting the important figures of the transition of Judaism into the Bet Midrash and central Sugiyot of this revolution.
During the course, we are going to analyze the Talmudic page, its various sources and their intertextuality. We will learn how to access tools for the understanding of the Talmud portions/Sugiyot. A focus will be put on electronically available tools and texts.

המהפכה הגדולה ביותר בתרבות היהודית נוצרה במאות הראשונות לספירה, על ידי חבורה קטנה של חכמים שחיו בארץ ישראל ובבבל – חכמי המשנה והתלמוד.  מיהן הדמויות שהניעו את המהפכה? מדוע הם יצרו את המהפכה? באלו תחומים באה לידי ביטוי המהפכנות שלהם ואיך יש לקרוא את יצירתם? 
הקורס יעסוק בהכרת המקורות הבסיסיים מהם מורכבת ספרות התלמוד, הכרת הדמויות המרכזיות של המהפכה התלמודית והסוגיות המרכזיות של המהפכה הזו
במסגרת הקורס נקדיש תשומת לב להכרת הדף התלמודי, את המקורות השונים שמרכיבים אותו ואת האינטר-טקסטואליות שלו. נכיר גם כלי עזר להבנת הסוגיות התלמודיות

Rabbis who are not members of ERA, however they will not benefit from the discounted fee for ERA members.

Language:

Tuition will take place in English, but access to the texts in Hebrew and Aramaic is expected.
